Product Description

The Misterioso is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah from Paul and Isla Gordon’s organically farmed vineyards in Faugeres. All grapes were hand-picked and fermented with natural yeasts in open topped fermenters. They’ve got a bit of the hands-off hippy winemaker thing going, have the Gordon’s.

This sort of style is not unfamiliar to the Australian wine drinker with plenty of Shiraz and Grenache blends here. But this has quite the different accent. The Grenache is plump and juicy but there is an element of earthy, savoury restraint that creates extra interest.

For my mind the aromas here lean towards a warm, dark cherry character but there’s heaps more, roasted peanuts, leather and nutmeg spice smells too. The palate shows up mid weight dark cherry and some fuller blackcurrant flavours with a savoury, dried herbs and some pepper, slipping rather effortlessly over the pretty, fine tannins.

It really is an example of why the reds of this part of the world are just getting better and better. Great old vineyards sites, carefully managed and with fruit well handled by sympathetic Australian winemakers.

Raw meat, pepper, jubey blackcurrant and red fruit. Very youthful. Grainy tannins, a lowish acid, slippery feel, built on tannin. Dried herb and earth on finish. Character + 92 Points
