The 2019 vintage of our Grenache is now available. A very dry year with super low yields from the Doecke Eden Valley vineyard. We topped up with a little Grenache from the organic and biodynamic farmed Ahrens vineyard at Vine Vale. Grapes were picked on March 6th, the same as in 2018.
As with other years the grapes were hand picked and hand sorted through the crusher/ destemmer with some bunches left whole to add some structure and complexity. The natural yeasts were then left to do their thing. It was pressed out to tanks to settle and then older french oak barrels for aging.
The dry year shows in an extra element of concentration and tannin this vintage along with the signature raspberry notes of the Doecke fruit. A little less whole bunch so the spice held back a little to slightly darker fruit – though still bright a juicy. There is still that nutmeg and pepper note and a fine textured, svelte mid palate – the “kitten tongue” tannins carrying the juicy raspberry and cherry flavours with no overripe jammyness at all.
Quite dangerously drinkable. We love it.
Single vineyard planted in 1963. No chemical additions, fermented with wild yeast, minimal sulphur added.
Lighter and most lovely expression of Grenache here. Cherry pip, poached strawberry, spice, a potpourri perfume. Gentle and juicy, a slight bitter orange tweak, fine dusty tannin, almond biscuits and oregano on a neat and lets-go-again kind of finish. Hard not to race through a bottle of this. It’s such a great drink. I love a wine that’s not trying too hard. Highly recommended. 93 Points
