The Barossa is really one of the great wine producing regions of the world. Though some talk of simplicity, of simple, fruit sweet sunshine in a bottle styles. Which exist of course and have helped to attract many a consumer. But the valley also offers so much more. Old vineyards, varied soils, and winemakers striving to make a more nuanced wine.
The 2012 Cailiard Mataro is certainly of that modern, savoury, nuanced style. Rich enough to be generous with its blackfruits but held in shape by taut mataro tannins and a roast raddichio like bitter edge on the back palate that makes it an immensly satisfying wine to drink. Super wine.
